HEC devises framework for engg education

April 25(The News): Prominent experts from various engineering educational institutions of the country met under the chairmanship of the Executive Director, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Sohail H Naqvi at the HEC Secretariat recently. The meeting was held to develop a uniform and standardised framework for the development of engineering curricula in order to bring the engineering programmes at par with the international standards. The ways to advance the state of technology and meet the needs of the industry were also discussed.

While discussing the framework the experts agreed that the engineering programmes being offered at the universities in Pakistan will consist of a total 130 to 136 credit hours for the four-year B.Sc./B.E. degrees and the engineering courses will be 65 to 70 per cent of the curricula. Emphasis will be given to leadership and communication skills, technical report writing and professional ethics.

Social sciences will be an essential component of the whole programme and the curricula will be prepared to develop self-learning and analytic thinking so as to promote research culture in the universities.
