Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu Pakistan
Karachi: The deterioration of Urdu's status as the 'National Language' under the
collective apathy of the government has finally driven Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu
Pakistan (ATUP) to take the matter into their own hands. The organisation which
was founded for the promotion of Urdu as a language, its culture and its
literature, recently laid the foundation for its new building that will be built
on an area of 5300 square feet. The complex, situated in
Gulistan-e-Jauhar in front of the University of Karachi (KU), will have a
publication centre, research centre and an administration block in addition to a
restaurant, a dining hall, hostel for national and international researchers, a
library and a seminar hall to hold literary functions. Currently the ATUP
is located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and has a research library that contains about
40,000 books, 30,000 journals and a large number of manuscripts that satiate the
needs of researchers who come from Karachi and other cities. Bashir Ahmed
Baloch, who is currently working for his PhD degree from Islamic University
Bahawalpur, divides his time between the two cities for his research. He stated:
"I am working on the thesis 'Feminism in The Urdu Poetry of Pakistani Women' and
the ATUP library contains many invaluable books on the
subject". Jamiluddin Aali, noted Urdu poet, playwright and scholar has
been associated with ATUP for a long time. According to him, Akhtar Hussain
Raipuri, Qudratullah Shahab and Nurul Hasan Jaffery have all performed an
invaluable service for the organisation. "Usually the ATUP has financial
troubles and it has been difficult to maintain our research and other
activities. But we have strived hard to keep it (ATUP) afloat. After all it is a
sacred trust for us that have been transferred from Maulana Shibli Nomani and
Baba-e Urdu to us. We are holding lectures, seminars and remember the literary
accomplishments of people like Prof Hasan Askari, Tabish Dehelvi, Shaukat
Siddiqui, Salim Ahmed and Mumtaz Hasan", he said. The editor of 'Qaumi
Zaban', Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, stated that from 1912 to 1961, the ATUP had
published 300 books, and from 1961 till date, 350 more books have been printed.
"All the books have literary value and are meant to cater to the need of
the Urdu diaspora in all the four corners of the world. But we are also trying
to get the rightful place of Urdu in the country. Despite tall claims it seems
that government is hesitant in adopting Urdu in its offices. "Most
countries adopted their national languages soon after their independence. Sadly
that was not the case in Pakistan", he said. However, he noted that the
Federal government does provide a grant of 1.5 million rupees annually and the
Sindh government and City District Government Karachi (CDGK) have also provided
some aid. 'This is a silver lining on the otherwise overcast skies of our
educational world", he jokes. The news
