Campus killing: University teachers appeal for calm
Hyderabad: The Teachers Association of Mehran University of Engineering
and Technology on Monday organised a peace rally on the campus to appeal for
calm and condemn the Aug 7 bloody clash between two student groups in which a
student Asadullah Abbasi was killed. The rally, led by the university's
vice-chancellor, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput, started from the university gate
and terminated at the teachers common room. Addressing the rally, the
vice-chancellor said that the Aug 7 incident was a great tragedy and stressed
the need for collective efforts to restore peace on the campus. The
president of the University Teachers Association, Prof Dr Ghous Bux Khaskheli,
appealed to all student organisations, intellectuals, civil society leaders and
parents to come forward and help the university in restoring a peaceful
atmosphere on the campus. The general secretary of the association, Prof
Jurial Sangi, and leaders of the officers association also spoke on the
occasion. The pro-vice chancellor, deans of various faculties, heads of
different departments, teachers, university officials and a large number of
students participated in the rally. BOYCOTT: College teachers boycotted
classes in Hyderabad and Khairpur region on Monday on a call given by the
provincial administrative council of SPLA in protest against non-regularisation
of many ad hoc lecturers. A spokesman for SPLA, Prof Yaqoob Chandio,
said that ad hoc lecturers who had performed their duties only for six months
were confirmed in the three provinces of the country but Sindh was meting out
step-motherly treatment to ad hoc lecturers who had performed their duties for
years. About 1,326 posts of college teachers in grade-18, 19 and 20 had
been vacant in the province for last many years but the government had failed to
fill them, Prof Chandio said. Similarly, he said that in other
provinces, college teachers had been given time scale and had been upgraded but
the college teachers in Sindh had been deprived of time scale and upgradation.
He appealed to the president and prime minister, speaker of National
Assembly and federal education minister to take notice of the injustice.

Teachers block highway
Hyerabad: A large number of primary school teachers of Matiari district
blocked the National Highway on Monday by observing a sit-in on the road in
protest against non-payment of salaries. The protest was led by the
district president of the Primary Teachers Association, Anaruddin Shah and other
office-bearers of the association. The angry protesters raised
full-throated slogans against the district administration and hurled stones at
the vehicles. Matiari DCO Saqib Ali Soomro arrived there and persuaded
the protesters to end the road block. He assured them that all government
employees would be paid salaries within two days. According to some
reports, tens of millions of rupees of the district government have disappeared
mysteriously from its account, pushing the district government into serious
financial crisis. Reports said that hundreds of district government
employees had not been paid salaries for the month of July. Dawn

UDB set to complete 22nd edition of Urdu dictionary
Karachi: The Urdu Dictionary Board (UDB) is in the process of completing
the compilation of the 22nd volume of the Urdu Dictionary that will be ready in
a couple of months. This will include compilation from the first alphabet to the
last alphabet of Urdu and prove to be a milestone in the history of Urdu
Lexicography. Farhat Fatima of the UDB was all smiles when she said about the latest development in this project. "This is momentous work and
we in the UDB are proud to be a part of it. We also acknowledge the grand
contributions of the stalwarts of Urdu Language who were with us, such as Dr
Jamil Jalibi and Dr Farman Fatehpuri, to name a few," she said. However,
the junior staff members did not share her enthusiasm as they were concerned
about plans to merge the UDB with the National Book Foundation (NBF), lack of
promotions and much-needed renovation of the offices. An editorial staff member,
requesting anonymity, expressed his resentment about the proposed merger. "It is
unnecessary and is being proposed without any good reason. The UDB is being
neglected as if it were a non-entity. We are doing something that will be
remembered by the Urdu diaspora for a long time to come," he lamented.
The Chairman and Professor at the Department of Urdu, University of
Karachi (KU), Dr Zafar Iqbal, shared this sentiment. "It is (the merger) nothing
but greed… it is about disposing UDB property worth at least Rs500 million. This
is prime land and the bureaucrats have their eyes set on it. The UDB was
established in 1948 while NBF was founded in early 70s during Zulfiqar Ali
Bhutto's regime," Dr Iqbal said. He further said that
lexicography is both an art and science and only those who have command over the
language and knowledge of research methods can head the UDB. Sadly, he said,
"those in Islamabad are only concerned about the monetary gains to be had from
this merger rather than appreciating the quality work that the UDB is doing."
Meanwhile, Fahmida Riaz, a noted Urdu writer and poet who has been
appointed as Chief Editor, UDB, said that she was keeping her fingers crossed.
Talking about her visit to Islamabad to put UDB's affairs on track, she said
that one can only "wait and see." Even the former Chief Editor UDB, Dr
Farman Fatehpuri, an eminent Urdu linguist, researcher and writer, admitted that
the Federal Education Department is not taking the UDB seriously. "I don't
understand the attitude of the officials. The UDB is an institution that is
completing a gigantic task and should be commended. Instead, official
interference is affecting the spirits of the UDB staff. The last volume of the
dictionary is in the final stages of completion. Then, work on an abridged
dictionary for beginners and students will start. Other dictionaries in Urdu,
Sindhi and other regional languages will be initiated later. They (the officials
in Islamabad) should know better," he said. caption UDB
stakeholders fear that the valuable property and future of staff is under severe
risk if the merger with NBF is completed.

5,000 schools will be reopened: minister
Nawabshah: The Sindh government is making efforts to reopen more than
5,000 closed schools in Sindh and maintain law and order, said the provincial
Education Minister, Pir Mazharul Haq. Talking to journalists at a lunch
hoisted by Taluka President PPP Ziaul Hassan Lanjar at Gymkhana on Monday, he
said that the number of closed schools had reduced to 5,000 from 7,700 and the
department was recruiting teachers through entry test to reopen the remaining
ones. In reply to a question, he said that the law and order situation
was not satisfactory in Sindh but was better as compared to other provinces.
He appreciated the efforts of home minister in controlling the situation
and was confident that the target killings would come to an end, soon.
He refuted the impression that all sugar mills in the province belonged
to PPP leaders but expressed his resolve of taking action against hoarders and
raids in this regard were being conducted on information of stashing. He
said that the tenure of local bodies would complete in October after which
government officials would be appointed as administrators. He said that the MQM
was their coalition partner and negotiations regarding local government system
were in process. He said that the Sindh Governor had objected to the
summary of Sindh Cabinet for the establishment of Board of Intermediate and
Secondary Education in Nawabshah which was handed over to the committee. The
Governor would be approached for the removal of objection. Earlier, the
minister visited the Provincial Institute of Teachers Education, Quaid-e-Awam
University of Engineering Science and Technology and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto
public school where he was given briefing. The news
