A college that 'knows no boundaries'
Lahore: Work on reconstruction of the boundary wall of the Government College of Commerce, Iqbal Town, could not be initiated with only a fortnight or so left to resumption of academic activities after conclusion of summer vacation.

The wall started caving in on July 26 following rupture of a portion of the trunk sewer nearby, causing a ditch near Jorian Pul in Ravi Block of Iqbal Town.

The 300-foot or so long ditch was filled by Aug 2 after replacing 14 collapsed pipes of the trunk sewer in the area and traffic on the road along the drain and facing the college was restored the following morning but work on the wall has yet to be initiated.

Holding the Water and Sanitation Agency responsible for the collapse, the college administration said that all expenses on raising the wall should be borne by the agency.

A Wasa official said his agency would reconstruct the wall but after completion of the project for replacement of the entire sewerage system of Iqbal Town, laid before the launch of the housing scheme, that has been part of the Rs1,018 million package announced by the chief minister. "Work on the project will begin soon after the monsoon," the official said.

Some six months ago, height of boundary walls of all public and private educational institutions was increased up to eight feet with fixing of barbed wire atop after a series of bomb blasts in the city. Dawn
