SC seeks comment from UVAS on 'discrimination' complaint
LAHORE, Aug 29: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday
sought comments from the management of the University of Veterinary and Animal
Sciences (UVAS) to review whether or not it had discriminated a candidate for
the post of associate professor. The bench, consisting of Justice Falak Sher,
Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jillani and Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmad, passed the
order on the petition of Muhammad Aslam Mirza who had alleged that he was a
victim of discrimination and the university did not given him the post of
associate professor due to discrimination. He said the university had advertised
a job in the Department of Animal Sciences on February 23, 2006, but had denied
him the job though he had fulfilled the criteria. During proceedings, the bench
found that the university administration had appointed its employee, Anjum
Khaliq, an assistant professor, and had turned down the appellant's application
on technical grounds. Attique Ahmad, registrar of the university, told the court
that Mirza had been refused because he did not follow the laid down procedure
while applying for the job. The court adjourned the case and allowed the
registrar to come up with all the information regarding the case within 15 days. Daily times
