VC stresses research activities

Lahore, Dec 22: Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has said the prime importance of a university was determined on the basis of its research work and creation of new knowledge.

Addressing the participants at a one-day seminar held in connection with the centenary birth anniversary of renowned Urdu poet Noon Meem Rashid organised by Urdu Department at Oriental College Sheerani Hall here on Tuesday ,he said his main focus was on promotion of varsity research activities, for which he has always given paramount importance to allocation of generous funds for PhD and other research related programmes, publication of new books and enabling varsity scholars to participate in foreign conferences for providing them international exposure in their specialised fields of knowledge.

Rector International Islamic University Islamabad Prof Fateh Muhammad Malik, daughter of late poet Nasreen Rashid, Dr Fakhar-ul-Haq Noori, Principal Dr Mazhar Moeen, Dr Hafiz Mahmood Akhtar and other eminent Urdu scholars also addressed the audience.

The Vice-Chancellor said the reputation of universities depends upon strength of their PhD faculty who contribute to a country's economic success and its intellectual and cultural development through generation and application of new knowledge and innovations.

He said ever since its establishment, the Oriental College has rendered an enviable role in the promotion of Urdu poetry and literature in the Indo-Pak Sub-continent.

He said an overwhelming number of title pages of books uploaded on Varsity websites have been authored by the Oriental College faculty for which they deserve our felicitation.

He expressed the hope that the college scholars would not only continue their healthy tradition of contributing research papers and new books to promote cause of Urdu language and poetry but would also further enhance their creative and literary endeavors in the years to come.

He also paid rich tributes to the Chairman Urdu Department Prof Fakhar-ul-Haq Noori and his colleagues who had spared no efforts to make the Noon Meem Rashid seminar a resounding success.

Addressing the seminar, Prof Fateh Muhammad Malik observed that Noon Meem Rashid was the pioneer Urdu poet who had broken monopoly of traditional Urdu poetry and brought recognition to the modern free poetic genre.

He said Noon Meem Rashid was poet first and a prose writer, critic and essayist second. He said Rashid belonged to a rare breed of Urdu poets who had unique command over Urdu language and was known for his love for humanity. Prof Fakhar-ul-Haq Noori in his key-note address, gave a brief account of Noon Meem Rashid's life and his poetic contributions. Prof Dr Mahmood Akhtar observed that the living nations always remember the meritorious services of their national benefactors and not only pay homage to their linguistic and literary services but also seek guidance from their contributions for furthering the cause of Urdu literature and poetry.

Later Dr Kamran gave away shields to Prof Fateh Muhammad Malik, Dr Saadat Saeed, Nasreen Rashid, Dr Fakhar-ul-Haq Noori, Prof Kh. Muhammad Zakria, Prof Qamar Ali Zaidi and other reputed Urdu scholars. Launching ceremony of books brought out by the Urdu Department on the centenary birth anniversary of Noon Meem Rashid was also performed by Dr Kamran on this occasion.

Jamshaid Chishti presented popular free verses of the late poet before the audience.

Lahore: PU has awarded PhD degree to Shah Jahan in the subject of Molecular Biology after approval of his research thesis.

GCU shines at CM's speech contest
Lahore: Debating Society of Government College University (GCU) has set an unprecedented record of wining overall 17 positions at the Chief Minister Punjab Speech Contest 2010. The final rounds, held on Tuesday at the Govt Science College, Wahdat Road and Government Postgraduate College for Women, Wahdat Road, GCU speakers won three distinctions.

In the Postgraduate English category, Muhammad Umer Jee Saleemi stood first and Ali Zafar secured the second position among the winners of the Division level, who represented the best universities of Punjab.

In the Intermediate English category, Ahmed Chaudhry was declared the best speaker at the district, division and province levels.

Earlier, in the district and division level rounds, GCU bagged a total of 14 positions in various categories. Overall, GCU speakers won 17 positions and a total of Rs 0.5 million cash prize this year.
