CPSP awards degrees to 355 students
Karachi, Dec 28: The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has awarded 355
students of the southern half of Pakistan 286 FCPS, 59 MCPS, nine DCPS
(HCSM) and one HPE degrees and diplomas in various disciplines of
medical science. The students were conferred the degrees
and diplomas in the 47th Convocation of the CPSP held at the premises of
the college in the city on Thursday. The earlier two
convocations were held at Regional Centres on June 8 and Nov 2 this year
at Lahore and Islamabad respectively, said a statement on Thursday. The
convocation held in Karachi is the third of the series where the
eminent educationist of the medical profession Prof S.M. Rab who is the
only surviving founding fellow of the college was the chief guest while
CPSP President Prof Zafar Ullah Chaudhry presided over the event. Dr
Farheen Karim has been awarded the gold medal for showing excellence in
the discipline of Haematology. Seven gold medals were awarded to
fellows in earlier convocations held this year. This new batch of
specialists added to the specific workforce of medical science would
strengthen the healthcare system of the country. Prof
Zafar Chaudhry delightedly pronounced that the CPSP has been given The
Best Enterprise in the Education Sphere award by Socrates Committee
under the auspices of the Oxford Summit of Leader Europe Business
Assembly. The best medical education college medal was
presented to CPSP president in its recent congregation held this month
in the UK. It is the acknowledgement of the meritorious services
rendered by CPSP's present council in the field of medicine. The CPSP

Admit cards for HSC supplementary exam issued
Karachi: Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has issued admit
cards to candidates of the HSC Supplementary Examinations 2013.
Controller of Examinations of the BIEK, Muhammad Imran Khan Chishti,
announced this on Tuesday. He said that the admit cards of the private
candidates have been dispatched at their residential addresses as
mentioned in the examination forms. The admit cards of the regular
candidates have been sent to their respective colleges. The regular
candidates have been asked to collect the same from their institutions.

Students granted degrees at Bahria University Convocation
Karachi: The 10th Convocation of Bahria University,
Karachi was held on Sunday, at Bahria Karachi campus to commemorate the
academic accomplishments of its students. Governor State Bank of
Pakistan Yaseen Anwar graced the occasion with his presence and
conferred degrees on the graduating students. A total 604 students were
awarded degrees. Anwar along with the Rector of Bahria University, Vice
Admiral (retd) Shahid Iqbal awarded 15 gold medals and 10 silver medals
to various students, who achieved top positions in their respective
departments. While speaking to the students, Anwar congratulated the

Posco awards fellowship to 10 KU students
Karachi: As per Unesco statistics, the average enrolment in the tertiary level of
education has been increasing every year. "One of the reasons behind
this improvement is the increased exposure provided to our youth for
which organisations like Posco TJ Park Foundation are playing a
significant role," said a statement issued here. The Posco
TJ Park Foundation has been focusing on developing international
scholarship programs in Asia, especially in Pakistan, which helps in
providing a worldwide recognition to its huge pool of intellectual
manpower. "We strongly believe that if appropriate
exposure is provided to these minds of intellect, then Pakistan will be
able to meet the challenges of this ever expanding horizon of innovation
and technology." These views were expressed by Vice
Chancellor Karachi University Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser and Consul General
of the Republic of Korea Lee Chang Heeduring during their address to
the Posco Asia Fellowship Award Ceremony-2013 held at the KU VC
Secretariat on Friday. The Posco Asia Fellowship is a
scholarship program designed to invite promising Asian graduate students
to the Masters and PhD programs at the Graduate School of International
Studies (GSIS), Seoul National University (SNU), supporting their
studies at one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning
in Korea. The fellowship offered by the Posco TJ Park
Foundation covers full tuitions for up to four semesters at GSIS SNU and
monthly living stipends for two years in Korea.

Aligarhian from US visits SSUET
Karachi: The Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) is an
institution of which anyone having association with and love for great
reformer and educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan can feel pride for its
being the fruit of Sir Syed's educational endeavours. This
was observed by SSUET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Jawaid H Rizvi while
speaking at a reception hosted by the Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys
Association (AMUOBA) in honour of Dr Shaheer Khan, the visiting
Aligarhian and noted member of the Aligarh Muslim University Alumni
(AMUA) Northern California. An official of the
institution said here on Thursday that Dr Rizvi welcomed Dr Shaheer and
appreciated his services for the cause of Aligarhians at the
international level. In his remarks, Dr Shaheer
highlighted the establishment of the Aligarh Muslim University Alumni,
USA, and said that its foundation was laid in the 1970s and today it had
many branches which were playing an important role towards the
promotion of education and Aligarh culture. He informed
that a directory of alumni members had also been prepared containing the
names and addresses of some 25,000 members from 102 countries of the
world. Many websites have been developed on the Internet
in relation to Sir Syed and Aligarh Muslim University and they contain
enormous information about the Aligarh Movement which ultimately led to
the creation of Pakistan. Dr Shaheer paid rich tributes
to the late chancellor Z A Nizami and AMUOBA General Secretary the late
Mohammed Zakir Ali Khan for the cause of the promotion of the Aligarh
Movement. Appreciating the services of Dr Shaheer in
relation to the cause of the Aligarhians, AMUOBA General Secretary
Mukhtar Ahmed Naqvi described the establishment of Sir Syed University a
great achievement of the Old Boys of Aligarh Muslim University and said
this exemplary feat should be emulated the world over. He suggested
that a campaign be launched in the US for an endowment fund of the
SSUET.

Sindh varsity's Dr Manzoor wins medal
Karachi: President Economic Cooperation Organisations Science Foundation (ECOSF) Dr
Manzoor Hussain Soomro was decorated with a gold medal by the University
of Sindh (SU) on Thursday in recognition of his contributions to the
fields of science, technology and education. The medal
was awarded to Professor Soomro by Sindh Senior Minister for Education
Nisar Ahmed Khuhro at the university's convocation, a press release
said. Prof Soomro has a brilliant academic and over 30
years of professional career. He is a pioneer scientist who diagnosed
the epidemic of banana birch top virus (BBTV) that had destroyed the
banana crop in the country in the early 1990s and his scientific
research and training of farmers revived the crop. In
recognition of his outstanding work, he was appointed by the
International Banana Network (INIBAP) as member of its Advisory
Committee for the Asia and Pacific region that he served for five years.
Dr Soomro also served in the FAO of the United Nations
chief scientific officer, DG Pakistan Museum of Natural History, DG
PASTIC Member Science and Chairman of the Pakistan Science Foundation
