KMC students want action against accused professor
Peshawar, Dec 21: The students of Khyber Medical College (KMC) and other institutions
staged a protest rally outside the Convocation Hall of the University of
Peshawar and demanded Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to take stern action
against the professor who allegedly thrashed a medical student for
observing purdah. The students, under the aegis of
Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, gathered outside the Convocation Hall and
chanted slogans against the professor concerned. The governor, after the
convocation, met the protesting students and assured them that action
would be taken against the professor, if found guilty. The
governor directed vice-chancellor Khyber Medical University Prof Dr
Hafizullah and Principal KMC Dr Ejaz Hassan Khan to expedite the process
of inquiry into the matter and submit him report at the earliest. Last
week Prof Dr Rahim Bangash of KMC allegedlythrashed a first year
student Misbah Syed of the institution after an exchange of arguments
with her on purdah. The incident triggered a series of protests against
the professor prompting the college management to constitute an inquiry
committee. The committee is still in process to
investigate the matter. A member of the committee said that the inquiry was still on and they have also invited some seven prominent
religious scholars for their input from Islamic point of view. "These
scholars have also been regularly attending the meetings of the
committee," he informed. He said that they have done most of their job
and would soon submit final report to the quarters concerned.
