Creative Sindhi literature
Karachi: The year 2009 saw a decline in the production of creative literature in both prose and poetry genres in Sindhi language. Several books by different writers were published but the critics assess that the works created in the past were more worthwhile than today's literary works, be it poetry or prose.

However the effort by Sindhi Language Authority (SLA) that published the first volume of Sindhi Encyclopedia was appreciated. The completion of project that had been started ten years ago was termed the most valuable work the year. Moreover SLA officials said that they have completed three volumes out of which one has come to the market and other two are in printing process.

Renowned poet Dr Suleman Solangi's book 'Chand, samoond, pathar akhyoon' inspired the readers. Solangi is known as one of the few skilled poets of Sindi.

The collections of poetry 'Man Sindh jaee ahian' by Devi Nagrani, 'Dard joon ayatoon' by Saeed Memon, 'Jahri sij kakor' by Mohammed Ali Manjhi, munhinja khwab gulaban jahra by Zulfiqar Behan, 'Samrian je shahr mey' by Asim Nathan Shahi and Ikhtlaf by Badal hit the market this year. Indian poet Luxuman Dabi's poetry collection was also published.

However the critics believe that the content, creative flight and the exclusivity in Sindhi literature are not as well-built now as they once used to be. They agreed with the opinion of renowned Indian Sindhi poet Lachhman Koomal, who out rejected the modern works of poetry and fiction produced in Sindh, and termed them "trash literature".

The trend of resistance literature which was considered powerful, mostly due to writings during the movement against One Unit and later during the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD), has also declined. It was richer ideologically than the literature that is being produced today. Thoughts of sufis were expressed in poetry with more feelings and traditions of romantic poetry were stronger.

In this regard secretary general of Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Yousuf Sindhi said that government and private publishing institutions have their own priority and they ignore the works of young writers. Sindhi, who is presently a powerful voice among young writers and conducts literary classes voluntarily all over the province added that the publishers only publish books written by renowned writers which results in the reproduction of old books instead of publishing of fresh work. He said that this denies critics the chance to come across new work and assess modern trends, values, literary theories and diction.

Moreover it has been learnt that the performance of four government-run organisations, Sindhi Adabi Board, Sindhi Language Authority, Sindh Cultural Department and Sindhology also publish books by those writers who do not demand royalty, rather than publishing genuine work to promote the literature.

There was only one publishing house, New Fields in Hyderabad, which would publish more than 250 books, all in creative literature which closed down some years back. Other private publishing houses that worked to promote creative literature now only publish those books whose writers are ready to bear the cost of publishing.

Similarly the role of Sindh Cultural Department is not convincing. The department has only published three books out of the total 22 volumes of the published and unpublished works of Sheikh Ayaz.

Similarly the scope of Sindhology, a research-oriented institution, comprises the study of antiquities, the relics, and history both of ancient and modern Sindh with particular reference to its culture, society and classic literature. However contrary to what it stands for, it has done little research on classic poetry.
