Private schools complaints about excess fees

Private schools inspections next week over fees, teachers' salaries
Karachi, July 03, 2008: The Sindh Education Department has suspended its inspection of private schools for a week after the schools asked for it to wait till their key staff returned from the vacations. One of the first schools was Mama Parsi Girls Secondary School on June 18.

There are 30 schools on the first list, according to director Mansoob Ahmed Siddiqui who formed the inspection team. "They are ready for inspections but requested time," said Siddiqui while talking to us on Wednesday. "We have received 210 complaints from parents and staff, especially teachers." Most of complaints were about excess fees and unpaid teachers during vacations.

The Mama Parsi school report will be presented by July 25. In the meanwhile, the school's administration was advised to have its second shift registered with the directorate and to refund the excess amount that has been allegedly charged from students as admission fees within seven days.

Mama Parsi principal Z.T. Mavawallah has said that the school had been serving the city for the past 90 years and nobody had ever asked for any registration. However, they had no problems complying with government regulations.

The education department has focused on inspecting fees, teacher salaries, admission policies and syllabus among other areas. An old bone of contention has been the demand parents pay advance fees for summer vacation months June, July and August. The Sindh Education Department has clearly informed private schools that it cannot ask for advance fees and can only collect late fees after the tenth of each month. Last year, the Sindh government took action against schools which were collecting excess fees.

Another problem is the increase in tuition fees with some going up 20 to 40 percent every year.

There are 2,400 registered private schools in Karachi but it is estimated that up to 3,000 are unregistered with the government. "We have no objection to the inspections," clarified a spokesman for the All Private Schools Management Association Sindh, Syed Khalid Shah. "It is the mandatory right of the Sindh government to conduct the inspections. Our only objection was that the inspection must be started when schools are open."

Siddiqui said that if school administrations will not cooperate with the inspection committees and still charge extra fees, their registration will be canceled. Daily Times

SPLA slams Khuhro for going back on his words
Larkana: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) took out a procession on Wednesday against the Sindh Education Minister's suggestion to 330 ad-hoc lecturers to appear in the Sindh Public Service Commission examinations prior to regularization.Led by SPLA leaders Prof Manzoor Chajjiro, Syed Asghar Ali Shah, Zulfikar Kolachi, Lal Bakhsh Kalhoro and others, protesters carrying banners, placards, and chanting slogans staged a sit-in outside the Jinnahbagh.

The SPLA leaders regretted that except Sindh, all provinces had regularized ad-hoc lecturers. The government of Dr Arbab Rahim kept them on false hopes, while the PPP sitting in Opposition had raised the issue in Assembly and also moved a resolution.

While the sitting Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro had moved a resolution in his previous capacity as the leader of Opposition for regularization of 330 ad-hoc lecturers but now he was pressing them to appear in SPSC examinations.

They called for early regularization and releasing of salaries of last six months. They also condemned the robbery at the house of Prof Dr Abdul Razzak Soomro and called for the arrest of culprits. They demanded the government to lift ban from teachers' unions and issue orders of promotion from grade 17 to 18 and 19. Dawn
