HEC announces ranking of universities
Islamabad, July 08: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced the ranking of Pakistani universities on Friday on the basis of quality teaching and research.
HEC Chairperson Dr Javaid R Laghari made the announcement at a press conference held at the commission secretariat. Speaking on the occasion, the HEC chairperson said the primary purpose of the ranking was to share the key issues that determine the state of higher education in a particular institution and drive the higher education institutions (HEIs) towards improved quality and research and promote a culture among HEIs of the country for participation in the world rankings.
Dr Laghari said that the ranking is a quality indicator and will help shed light on key indicators of higher education institutions to allow the students, parents, potential employers and all other stakeholders to make informed and timely decisions regarding higher education institutions. "It will inculcate a spirit of competition among the universities to raise the standard of education." HEC chairperson said. "The activity will also help promote a culture of participation in the world university rankings," he said.

Unlawful outfits won't be allowed to spoil PU's atmosphere: VC
Lahore: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Mujahid Kamran announced on Sunday that unlawful outfits of students would never be allowed to spoil the peaceful academic atmosphere of the varsity.
Talking to the media, he strongly condemned the misconduct of a handful of students belonging to a banned outfit. "I am brave enough to deal with such disgruntled elements with an iron hand as I myself have studied in the same institution," he said.
"The Punjab University is a prestigious educational institute of the subcontinent, imparting quality education in the public sector, and nobody can be allowed to play with the future of the nation," he said.
He said the bona fide students had always been encouraged to participate in healthy extracurricular activities, including all types of indoor and outdoor sports across the country. He said the varsity administration would ensure discipline among teachers, students and employees.
The VC said approval from the competent authority for holding a workshop, seminar and meeting was mandatory for students or organisers; otherwise it would amount to misconduct.
Prof Kamran said that he had always treated students as his children and extended all possible cooperation to them for their higher studies. He warned that no one would be permitted to achieve his/her vested interests and the PU would thwart their ulterior motives and nefarious anti-academic designs at all costs.
He said the PU was the only university in the world with the lowest fee structure, with much better modern facilities. He said that a few outsiders with vested interest would not be allowed to play with the destiny of other 30,000 students studying in 74 faculties.
He said all teachers, including the members of the Academic Staff Association, senate and syndicate of the university, were treated equally regarding discipline. app
