Dow students boycott classes
KARACHI, July 26: A large number of students of the Dow Medical College
on Wednesday boycotted classes in protest against the rustication of a final
year student on misconduct charges.
The students also placed banners and
posters inside the DMC's premises scribbled with slogans against the rustication
order.
A spokesperson for the DMC said Usman Tariq, a final year student,
was rusticated after he misbehaved with a professor, Zia Iqbal, and spoke
against the DUHS administration despite being given repeated
warnings.
The DMC officials said Usman was handed the rustication order
after it was duly endorsed by the Students' Action Committee.
"After the
decision the Jamiat students attacked the office of the vice-principal and
damaged the furniture and windowpanes. They threatened to kill the
vice-principal. An FIR has been lodged with the police against those involved,"
said a DMC official.
Usman Tariq said he was among the college students
who were protesting against the increase of Rs200 in examination fees.
"I
was stopped by the guard outside when I tried to visit the college principal. He
later ushered me into the vice-principal's office where the latter warned me of
action due to my activism against the increase in fees," Usman said. Dawn
