Education Dept to reclaim encroached land
LAHORE, July 25: The Education Department will the move courts to reclaim
school buildings from encroachers, special secretary for schools Zahid Saeed said on Tuesday. Saeed said the department had prepared data on
illegal possessors across Punjab and they would be treated according to the
Illegal Dispossession Act 2005.
The department had sent letters to executive
district officers (EDO) throughout the province in this regard, he added. He
said a number of cases against illegal occupants were already in the courts. Law
enforcement agencies were also told to help recover the assets of the Education
Department from the encroachers. He said the lack of accurate information had
prevented the department from taking action against the encroachers in the past.
He said schools that might have been constructed illegally on private lands
would be shifted to alternative places after the relevant rulings from the
courts. Encroachers had occupied the land of more than 35 schools in Lahore
alone, EDO Zahid Hussain said. Anyhow, the problem in Lahore was not
as serious as in other districts of Punjab, he added. Daily times
