PU holds workshop on beekeeping
Lahore: Awareness raising and training of honeybee farming can help
poverty alleviation and increase in the production of honey as well as crops
through pollination. This was stated by speakers at the concluding
session of the national workshop on "Beekeeping – Profitable Business" conducted
by the Punjab University's zoology department. The five-day workshop was
attended by the forest and agricultural scientists, researchers and beekeepers
from all the provinces and Azad Kashmir. Speaking on the occasion,
faculty of science dean Prof Dr Jamil Anwar Chaudhry said the university would
consider arranging this useful workshop twice a year and provide free boarding
and lodging to participants. Registrar Prof Dr Naeem Khan said the
participants should take full advantage of the experience and skills learnt in
the workshop and motivate others to start beekeeping. Organizer and
chief coordinator Prof Nasreen Muzaffar said the main objective of the workshop

Tree plantation campaign at PU
Lahore: Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran
on Friday launched a tree plantation campaign at the varsity by planting a
sapling at the Botanical Garden at New Campus. Senior officials of the
varsity were also present on the occasion. Prof Kamran said it was the country's
national and spiritual responsibility to raise more trees and look after the
existing green reserves, and create a better atmosphere with a healthier
ecosystem. Talking about the tree plantation campaign, Resident Officer-II Malik
Muhammad Zaheer informed the gathering about the plantation targets, including
the plantation of more than 6,000 tree saplings at the campus. Since the ratio
of forests to available land in Pakistan is already one of the lowest in the
world, it was agreed that a square-shaped birds' sanctuary would be developed on
one-acre. The VC also intends to plant saplings of shady and flowering
trees in collaboration with the forest department.
