KU announces admissions for PhD
Karachi, Mar 14: The registrar of the University of Karachi
(KU) on Sunday said that applications will be accepted for admissions in MS,
PhD, MS/Surgery and MD (Medicine) and admission forms would available from
Monday, March 14 to 22. The prospectus and entry test form could be downloaded
from www.uok.edu.pk, the official website of the university, whereas admission
forms could be submitted with Rs1000 in favour of the concerned department till
March 22, he said.

KU scientist awarded PAS gold medal
Karachi: The Pakistan Academy of Sciences has awarded PAS gold medal to Professor Dr Khalid
M. Khan, a senior scientist at the International Centre for Chemical and
Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University, in recognition of his services
in the field of chemistry. "Dr Khan has been working as a researcher at
the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, KU, for last many years," a spokesman
of the ICCBS said. KU Vice Chancellor Professor Pirzada Qasim Raza
Siddiqui, Coordinator General COMSTECH Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman and Director
ICCBS Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary have congratulated Dr Khan on his
remarkable achievement. They said that this achievement was an honour not only
for the ICCBS but also for the university, the spokesman said. According
to him, Dr Khan is an active scientist who has written two books, that have been
published internationally, and around 250 research papers in journals of
international repute. The government has already honoured him with
Tamgha-i-Imtiaz for remarkable performance.The news

International chemistry moot at KU
Karachi: The 9th International Chemistry Conference will commence
from March 14 at the auditorium of the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry here.
The moot is being organised by the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry in
collaboration with the Chemical Society of Pakistan (CSP). The organisers said
that the theme of the three-day conference is 'Chemistry for Peace'. The 21st
National Chemical Conference will also be conducted on the occasion.
Vice-Chancellor University of Karachi Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui will
be the chief guest. Former federal minister for Science and Technology Prof Dr
Attaur Rehman will be the guest of honour. Six hundred delegates from within the
country and abroad would participate. app

SSUET students to enjoy interest free loans
Karachi: Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET)
has approved the proposal of the Ihsan Trust to offer interest free soft loans
for the SSUET students. This decision was taken in the 39th meeting of Board of
Governors chaired by SSUET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Saiyid Nazir Ahmed in the
university on Sunday. Ihsan Trust through Meezan Bank would provide interest
free soft loans on merit-cum-need basis to the selected students of the
university. The trust will initially provide one million rupees per year and the
amount would increase gradually to accommodate a rising demand. It is pertinent
to mention here that the university' scholarship is comprised of almost half of
the tuition fee and now the students who are unable to pay remaining half of the
fee could be accommodated thorough this facility. The meeting has also decided
to organise the 14th Convocation of the university on March 19 for which
different committees have been constituted to look after and supervise the
preparations and arrangements for the convocation. Daily times

Zoo fee for students abolished
Karachi: The City District Government Karachi has abolished
the entry fees for students to the Karachi Zoological Garden for the year
2011. More than 7,000 students are said to have visited the zoo
on Saturday. The CDGK has urged schools' administrations to arrange more and more student
trips to the zoo so that they could learn more about the wildlife. Dawn
