'PU produced 303 PhDs in three years'
Lahore, Nov 25: Dean Mechanical Engineering Department Ljublijana University of Slovenia, Dr Peter Novak, held a detailed and in-depth meeting with PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran in his office committee room here on Wednesday and exchanged views for signing an MoU to promote research and academic collaboration as well as mutual exchange of faculty and student delegations between the Ljublijana University and Punjab University.
A press release here on Wednesday said while briefing Dr Peter Novak about the ongoing academic and research activities, the Vice-Chancellor observed that Punjab University has achieved remarkable progress in the PhD programme as a record number of 303 PhDs has been produced during the short span of last nearly three years. He said Punjab University scholars and faculty members are amongst the best and selected world wide owing to their outstanding teaching and research capabilities. He said during the last over 128 years of its establishment, the PU has been the leading provider of qualified, trained and skilled manpower to the country. He said collaboration between the two institutions would prove mutually highly beneficial for scholars and research workers of both the varsities.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Peter Novak informed that the University of Ljublijana has a student population of 40000 with 27 faculties while the number of its professors and researchers currently stands at 3000 and 2000 respectively. He also briefed the meeting about the capabilities and experience of Ljublijana experts in the field of hydle technology as well as advanced waste and biomass cogeneration technology. He said the Slovenia is in a unique position to extend helping hand in reducing Pakistanís steel imports and make up the country's power shortage significantly in the coming years. He further said the doors of Slovenian universities are open to welcome Punjab University faculty and students for undertaking PhD programme in their chosen fields. The meeting was attended by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Jamil Anwar Ch., Dean Life Sciences Prof Dr Shahida Hasnain, Dean Engineering & Technology Prof Dr Javed Ahmad, Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Treasurer Dr Uzma Ikram, Prof Dr Nasir Ahmad, Professor Emeritus Dr Muhammad Nawaz Chaudhry, Prof Dr Riaz Ahmad Sheikh, Advisor Col Ikramullah Khan and Director External Linkages Maria Maldonado.
PU VC greets women's cricket team
Lahore: Vice Chancellor Punjab University Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran congratulated Pakistani women's cricket team on achieving the highest position and winning a gold medal in the Asian Games.
The VC specially mentioned that the student of Punjab University Nida Rashid Dar who was presently studying in Sports Sciences and Physical Education Department in Masters classes. Nida Dar, who was declared best player of the final by taking four wickets and scoring 51 not out, was the main player who brought this victory for her country. Dr Mujahid Kamran, who himself has been a renowned hockey player, has taken keen interest in the welfare of the sportsmen as well as cocurricular and extracurricular activities.
Dr Kamran said the PU would arrange a befitting reception in honour of Nida Rashid Dar for bringing laurels to the varsity and country.
He said she would also be awarded suitable cash prize and a gold medal in the said reception.
The Vice-Chancellor said the varsity would provide modern sports facilities to the outstanding players who brought good name and fame in international competitions to the motherland.
PU to hold moot
Lahore: Punjab University College of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences in collaboration with Higher Education Commission will organize a 3-day 3rd international conference on "Statistical Sciences" from Nov 25 - 27. A press release here on Wednesday said the inaugural ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov 25 at 9:30 A.M at Faisal Auditorium, New Campus. Education Minister Punjab Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman will be the chief guest while PU VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran will preside over the inaugural ceremony.
Lahore: The Punjab University (PU) has awarded a PhD degree to Habib-ur-Rehman s/o Jahan Dad Khan in the subject of Chemistry after an approval of his research thesis titled "Synergic extraction of rare earth elements using picrolonic acid and other neutral oxo-donors". He has completed his thesis under the supervision of PU Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ch. Jamil Anwar.
Lahore: The convocation of the FC College (A charted university) will be held on Saturday, November 27. Governor Punjab Salman Taseer will be the chief guest.
