Mushahid hails IIU for organising book fair
ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 - Senator
Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Secretary General of Pakistan Muslim League has said
that book culture and reading are key indicators of an intellectually developed
civilized society with the right values.
He was speaking as Chief Guest at
the launching of the Book Fair at the International Islamic University here
Tuesday. He said that book culture was key to counter the Kalashnikov culture as
well as the culture of corruption, which was prevailing in Pakistan
today.
He said that Islam's glory was not linked to military might but to
the power of ideas, learning and knowledge. Cordoba and Baghdad had the biggest
and best libraries in the contemporary period.
Mushahid Hussain regretted
that today, values had changed because of obsession with money.
He said that
it was unfortunate that the Muslim world would be purchasing arms worth 33
billion dollars in the next 10 years.
If only 10% of that money was spent on
establishing educational institutions and libraries, which are important in
character building and promoting values not based on materialism, the destiny of
the Muslim Ummah would be different.
He also listed some latest books that
he recently read while he was in America which show that knowledge emanates from
writing and reading books.
He congratulated the students and faculty of the
International Islamic University for organizing this Book Fair. PPI
