The Punjab University History Department in collaboration with Pakistan Study Centre organised a lecture of Prof Dr Carla Petievich, professor of Asian Studies at University of Texas, Austin, on the topic of "What made the Mughals Great".

Prof Dr Carla Petievich talked about the contribution of the Mughal Empire to art and architecture as well as their special diplomatic and military skills.

She said that though Mughals came from a tribal tradition of Central Asia yet they assimilated the indigenous traditions with Perso-Central Asia Culture. In this way, they were able to evolve a cosmopolitan court which achieved the high level in music, paintings, art and architecture. She mentioned the religious tolerance and pluralism of the Mughals which made them acceptable to the local people of India.

According to her, the development of Indian art forms particularly the building of grand architectural monuments like the Taj Mahal of Agra, India, during the Mughal period was a great achievement of the Mughal Emperors.

At the end of her talk, the audience also asked questions from her.

Private academies advertise special Ramazan packages to attract students
Lahore: Various private academies in the city have started to advertise special `Ramazan packages' to attract more students and have announced special discounts in various subjects and courses.

However, students and teachers have said that the administrations of private academies are fleecing the students and exploiting religion to make more money.

Since Ramazan started, different hotels and boutiques of the city have been offering Ramazan packages and giving special discounts to customers on various items. Following this example, private academies have also started to offer special Ramazan packages and discount rates during the month.

Different techniques: Due to low percentages in the matriculation, intermediate and graduation results, several students are joining private academies to prepare for their supplementary examinations. To attract these students, different private academies are doing their best to get more students and are adopting different techniques of advertising, Ramazan packages being one of them.

Kashif Rehan, a student of BA, claimed that different academies were charging heavy amounts of money from students in the name of Ramazan. He said that almost all academies have started charging double their previous amounts during this month. He said that before Ramazan, all academies were charging Rs 2,500 per course. They now charge Rs 5,000 he said, claiming that they offered discounts under the Ramazan package to charge Rs 4,000.

Another student, Abdullah, said that some academies also offer iftar and charge an extra fee for that service.

Unable to get admission: Abida Begum, a teacher and mother of a student, said that several students at academies are those who were unable to get admission in colleges and have no other option. She said that the Ramazan package is just another way to earn money.

Mian Wahab, a citizen, said that it was interesting to see academies offering Ramazan packages. He said that he was amazed to see that even medical stores were offering Ramazan packages on the purchase of medicines. He said that Ramazan is a holy month and people should not exploit it in such a manner.

Ashfaq Bhutta, a teacher at Jameel Academy, said that such academies were not offering any education services and were simply businesses.

Masroor Ahmad, a college teacher, said that besides students who have failed, students of Government College University (GCU) Lahore, Forman Christian College University (FCCU), Kinnarid College (KC) and Lahore College Women University (LCWU) are actively joining these academies. He said that there are no checks on these academies, hence they use different tactics to exploit students. Daily Times
