What is MCPS exam?

MCPS stands for Member of college of Physicians and Surgeons, which is a post graduate two year’s diploma offered by CPSP (College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan) in twenty two (22) specialties. This diploma is locally recognized by HEC (Higher Education Commission), PMC(Pakistan Medical Council) or PMDC (Pakistan Medical and Dental Council).

Those doctors who have successfully completed their MBBS or BDS, completed their house job and have medical license issued can sit for MCPS exam.

MCPS or FCPS program? Which one to choose?

These are two different programs. FCPS (Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons) is a four (4) years post graduate fellow program, whereas MCPS is a two (2) years post graduate member diploma. Although both programs are offered by CPSP but FCPS has more significance in term of international recognition and job prospects, whereas MCPS has limitations in both of these areas.

MCPS registration and examination procedure

Candidate can apply for the MCPS registration in the months of January and July each year. After registration, candidate is required to attend workshops as per given syllabus. After attending these workshops, candidate can apply for examination. CPSP declares exam schedule for available exam dates on its official website each year.

MCPS exam format

This exam consists upon two parts, written and practical exams. Written exam can be given in almost all CPSP recognized centers, whereas practical exam is only conducted in CPSP centers in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

Written exam has two parts. One part consists upon 10 SAQs (Short Answer Questions), each SAQ contains 10 marks, making it a 100 marks part. Second part contains 100 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions), each MCQ contains one mark, making it 100 marks part. To pass these parts, one is required to score atleast 50% passing marks, combined in these parts.
