QCHP Pharmacist Exam Quick Summary

Qatar's pharmacist licensing test, the National Pharmacist Qualifying Examination (NPQE), is set by the Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) and delivered by Prometric: 150 MCQs, a 60% cut score and a fee of USD 244 in 2026. Its content and references were updated from 1 May 2025. Pharmacists who passed an accepted international exam, such as NAPLEX, can be exempt.

Pharmacists who want to work in Qatar are licensed by the Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP), still widely called QCHP. Most must pass the National Pharmacist Qualifying Examination. This guide explains who can sit it, who is exempt, the official blueprint, how to prepare and what happens after you pass.

Who can sit the QCHP pharmacist exam

DHP's Guidelines for Pharmacists set the rules for the Pharmacist title. If you qualified outside Qatar, you need:

  • A pharmacy degree (BPharm, PharmD or equivalent) from an institution DHP recognises.
  • Post-qualification experience as a pharmacist, as DHP's guidelines require for your degree, usually two years.
  • A valid licence for the years you worked and a certificate of good standing, both checked at the source by your verification provider.
  • No long break from practice, under DHP's break in practice policy.

Qatari nationals, children of Qatari mothers and graduates of universities in Qatar are exempt from the experience requirement under Circular DHP/2025/24, and residents' family members need one year, which they can complete through DHP-approved supervised training.

Who is exempt from the QCHP pharmacist exam

  • Qatari nationals, children of Qatari mothers, and graduates of public or private universities and higher education institutions in Qatar.
  • Pharmacists who passed an international exam on DHP's accepted list in Circular DHP/2025/19, such as NAPLEX (USA) or the PEBC exams (Canada). Since 1 January 2026 the result must be backed by a verification report.

Exemption replaces only the exam. You still need verification, experience and a DHP evaluation. See our guide to DHP Qatar exam exemption criteria.

How to apply, step by step

1
Check your scope
Read DHP's Guidelines for Pharmacists and confirm your qualification and experience meet the rules for the Pharmacist title.
2
Apply for evaluation
Applications go through DHP's Registration and Licensing System at dhpportal.moph.gov.qa, usually together with a Qatar employer or prospective employer.
3
Primary source verification
DataFlow or QuadraBay, the two providers DHP approves, verify your degree, experience, licence and good standing directly with the issuing bodies.
4
Book the exam
Once DHP approves you to sit the exam, book it on Prometric's Qatar DHP page under exam code SCHQ2, at an international Prometric centre or the Doha centre on C Ring Road.
5
Pass and get licensed
When you pass and your evaluation is approved, your employing facility completes the licensing step with DHP.

Documents to prepare

Your verification provider and DHP's evaluation team work from the same set of papers. Have clear scans of these ready:

  • Pharmacy degree and transcripts
  • Internship or training certificate, if your country requires one
  • Experience certificates with dates and job titles
  • Licences covering those years
  • Certificate of good standing from your licensing authority
  • Passport, a recent photograph and a CV on DHP's template

Most delays come from experience letters without exact dates, or licences that do not cover the whole period, so check these first.

Official NPQE blueprint

DHP's National Pharmacist Qualifying Examination blueprint sets the number of questions in each domain:

Clinical Sciences67 MCQs, 45%
Pharmacotherapy of common diseases, dosing in special groups, interactions, patient counselling.
Pharmaceutical Sciences38 MCQs, 25%

A pharmacist counsels a 30-year-old man starting treatment for smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis after acid-fast bacilli were seen on sputum microscopy. He asks why he must take tablets for 6 months when a chest infection usually needs only 5 days. Which explanation is most accurate?A. The drugs are poorly absorbed, so a long course compensatesB. Mycobacteria divide slowly and include dormant persisters that only long therapy eliminatesC. The mycobacterial cell wall prevents all drugs from enteringD. Six months of therapy is needed to let the vaccine take effect

Answer: B. Mycobacteria divide slowly and include dormant persisters that only long therapy eliminates
Explanation: Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an acid-fast bacillus whose waxy, mycolic acid rich cell wall retains carbol fuchsin in the Ziehl-Neelsen stain. It has a generation time of 15 to 20 hours, survives inside macrophages and within caseous lesions of poor drug penetration, and includes subpopulations of semi-dormant persisters that most drugs kill only slowly. Short courses therefore leave viable organisms and lead to relapse and acquired resistance.

A 42-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis is started on oral baclofen 5 mg three times daily for lower limb spasticity. A pharmacy student on placement asks how baclofen relaxes skeletal muscle. Which is the mechanism of action of baclofen?A. Positive allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptorsB. Agonism at GABA-B receptors in the spinal cordC. Blockade of ryanodine receptors in skeletal muscleD. Agonism at central alpha-2 adrenoceptors

Answer: B. Agonism at GABA-B receptors in the spinal cord
Explanation: Baclofen is a lipophilic analogue of GABA that acts as an agonist at GABA-B receptors, which are G-protein-coupled. In the spinal cord, presynaptic GABA-B activation reduces calcium entry and so reduces release of excitatory transmitters (glutamate, substance P), while postsynaptic activation opens potassium channels and hyperpolarises neurones. The result is less reflex activity and reduced spasticity of spinal origin (multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury).

A pharmacovigilance database contains 10,200 reports. Drug X has 200 reports, of which 20 describe interstitial lung disease. All other drugs together have 10,000 reports, of which 100 describe interstitial lung disease. What is the proportional reporting ratio (PRR) for interstitial lung disease with drug X?A. 10B. 0.1C. 11D. 1

Answer: A. 10
Explanation: Signal detection in spontaneous databases uses disproportionality analysis: is the event reported more often with this drug than with all other drugs? Set up the 2×2 table: a = 20 (drug X, event), b = 180 (drug X, other events), c = 100 (other drugs, event), d = 9,900 (other drugs, other events). PRR = [a/(a+b)] / [c/(c+d)] = (20/200) / (100/10,000) = 0.10 / 0.01 = 10.

A 35-year-old non-smoker asks for a cough medicine. For 4 days, since a cold, he has had a chesty cough producing clear to white sputum. He has no fever, breathlessness, chest pain or blood in the sputum, and takes no regular medicines. Which product is the most appropriate recommendation?A. Guaifenesin oral liquidB. Dextromethorphan oral liquidC. Codeine linctusD. Chlorphenamine with pholcodine linctus

Answer: A. Guaifenesin oral liquid
Explanation: A productive cough after a cold is usually viral and self-limiting (up to 3 weeks). Coughing clears sputum, so cough suppressants are illogical and may cause sputum retention. An expectorant such as guaifenesin is the conventional OTC choice: it is thought to increase the volume and reduce the viscosity of airway secretions.

In a study, healthy volunteers receive 75 g of glucose by mouth on one day and an intravenous glucose infusion matched to give exactly the same blood glucose profile on another day. Insulin secretion is about two to three times greater after the oral glucose. A pharmacist explains this to students learning about GLP-1 receptor agonists. Which mechanism explains the difference?A. Oral glucose is absorbed faster than intravenous glucose reaches the pancreasB. Intravenous glucose suppresses insulin release by stimulating somatostatinC. Oral glucose stimulates insulin only through the vagus (cephalic phase)D. Gut hormones GLP-1 and GIP, released by nutrients in the intestine, amplify glucose-dependent insulin secretion

Answer: D. Gut hormones GLP-1 and GIP, released by nutrients in the intestine, amplify glucose-dependent insulin secretion
Explanation: The incretin effect is the greater insulin response to oral than to intravenous glucose at the same blood glucose. Nutrients in the gut release GLP-1 from ileal and colonic L cells and GIP from duodenal K cells. They act on Gs-coupled receptors on beta cells to raise cAMP and amplify insulin secretion only when glucose is elevated.

Exam fee and rescheduling

Under Circular DHP/2024/10, the Prometric fee for every Qatar qualifying exam is USD 244 per attempt from 1 January 2026 (it was USD 238 in 2024 and 2025). Verification and DHP evaluation fees are paid separately. Changing or cancelling a booking costs:

When you change or cancelCharge
30 days or more before the examUSD 25
5 to 29 days before the examUSD 40
Less than 5 days before, not attending, or arriving over 30 minutes lateFull exam fee

On exam day

  • Bring the identity document you used to book; the name must match your Prometric appointment.
  • Phones, watches and notes go in a locker. Prometric gives you everything you need at the desk.
  • DHP and Prometric list 3 hours for the 150 questions, while DHP's blueprint document says 3.5 hours, so check the time on your booking confirmation and plan on about 70 seconds per question.
  • Flag hard questions and come back to them; every question counts towards the 90 correct answers you need.

Results and attempts

Prometric gives you your result at the centre when you finish. DHP applies the 60% cut score exactly as published, without rounding.

DHP's qualifying exam page currently states that applicants may attempt the exam an unlimited number of times. Earlier DHP rules allowed five consecutive attempts, so check the page on the day you book in case the rule changes again.

Getting your licence

Passing the exam makes you eligible, but you can practise only after DHP approves your evaluation and a licensed healthcare facility in Qatar employs you and completes your licence. Keep your verification report and good standing certificate current while you look for a job.
