Eligibility Criteria for MOH Oman (OMSB) General Dentist Exam 2026
OMSB General Dentist Eligibility Quick Summary
To practise as a general dentist in Oman you need a recognised BDS (or equivalent) dental degree, post-qualification clinical experience as required by the Ministry of Health (MOH) Oman, registration through the MOH Health Practitioners Registration e-service and a pass in the OMSB Omani Examination for General Dentistry (OEGD), a computer-based exam booked through Pearson VUE.
Candidates who want to work as a general dentist in the Sultanate of Oman deal with two bodies. The Ministry of Health registers and licenses health practitioners. The Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) runs the licensing exams, which it calls Occupational Classification (OC) examinations. OMSB states that MOH and other government and private institutions use these exams for licensing, so the same OEGD result serves both the public and private sector.
This page is about eligibility: what you need before you apply and sit the exam, and how booking works from Pakistan, India and elsewhere. For exam practice, go to our MOH Oman (OMSB) General Dentist exam page and the OMSB General Dentist Qbank.
Who is eligible for the MOH Oman (OMSB) General Dentist exam?
How much experience do I need as a general dentist in Oman?
This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is that it depends on where you will work. The MOH Health Practitioners Registration service asks for experience certificates but does not publish a single number on its service page. Our earlier version of this page said at least 2 years of clinical experience after internship or house job. A ministerial decision reported in the press raised this to 3 years for private-sector GPs and dentists trained outside Oman, with graduates of Omani colleges exempt.
So if you have 2 years, you may be fine for some posts and short for others. Ask your prospective employer which rule applies to the post, and check with MOH before you pay for anything.
How do I apply? The licensing steps
OMSB exams can be booked directly, so many candidates sit the OEGD before they register, and a score report in hand makes the job search easier. The official details are on the MOH Oman registration service page and the Pearson VUE OMSB page.
What is the exam format and syllabus?
The OEGD is a computer-based MCQ exam. OMSB does not publish the number of questions, the time or the pass mark on its public exam pages. Figures you may see online (such as 100 MCQs in 2.5 hours with a 65% pass mark) date from the period when Prometric delivered OMSB exams, and we could not confirm them on OMSB's current pages. Check the exam content document on the OMSB website, or email OMSB, before you plan your timing.
Older candidates may also remember a viva after the written paper. The current OMSB pages describe only the computer-based exam for licensing, although some employers hold their own interview.
The syllabus can be divided into these topics:
- Operative Dentistry
- Endodontics
- Oral Surgery
- Periodontics
- Prosthodontics
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Orthodontics
- Special Care Dentistry
- Basic sciences
- Core competencies (infection control, ethics etc.)
How do I book the OMSB exam from Pakistan or India?
Pearson VUE handles booking, payment and rescheduling for OMSB. A few practical points from its OMSB page:
| Point | What Pearson VUE says |
|---|---|
| Paying online | Visa or Mastercard. Debit cards must allow online payments. |
| Pakistan | Online booking is not available. Buy a voucher by bank transfer, or book at a test centre at least 2 business days ahead and pay in cash. |
| Reschedule or cancel | Free if done at least 48 hours before the exam, with a full refund on cancellation. Later changes may lose the fee. |
| ID | One original, valid government ID with photo and signature. If you test outside your country of citizenship, only a passport is accepted. |
| Attempts | No maximum number of attempts at present. Retakes follow OMSB policy and every booking is paid again. |
Is the OMSB General Dentistry residency the same as the licensing exam?
No, and readers mix the two up often. OMSB also runs a General Dentistry residency training programme. Its entry criteria are a recognised BDS or equivalent, at least 24 months of clinical experience, the MFDS or an equivalent and an interview, with OMSB Part 1 and Part 2 exams during training. That is postgraduate training. The OEGD described on this page is the licensing exam for working as a general dentist.
What is the recommended study material
While preparing for the OMSB General Dentist exam, focus on the clinical dentistry areas that come up most: restorative and endodontic diagnosis, oral surgery complications, periodontal instrumentation, paediatric trauma and infection control. You may use the OMSB General Dentist Qbank, created by Interface Medical Education and compiled from the feedback of actual test takers along with other useful resources.

Two questions in the clinical scenario style used in Gulf licensing exams. Tap a question to see the answer.
Question 1: Dental trauma
A 9-year-old boy is brought to your clinic 30 minutes after his permanent maxillary central incisor was knocked out playing football. His mother kept the tooth in cold milk. You rinse the tooth with saline and replant it. What is the most appropriate splint?
A) Rigid splint for 6 weeks
B) Flexible splint for 2 weeks
C) Flexible splint for 4 weeks
D) No splint; soft diet only
Correct answer: B) Flexible splint for 2 weeks
Current IADT guidance for a replanted avulsed permanent tooth is a passive, flexible splint for 2 weeks. Rigid or long splinting increases the risk of replacement resorption (ankylosis). Four weeks of flexible splinting is used for alveolar fractures and some root fractures, not for avulsion.
Question 2: Periodontics
You are doing root surface debridement on a 45-year-old patient with a 6 mm pocket on the mesial surface of the mandibular right first molar. Which area-specific curette is designed for this surface?
A) Gracey 1/2
B) Gracey 7/8
C) Gracey 11/12
D) Gracey 13/14
Correct answer: C) Gracey 11/12
Gracey 11/12 is for the mesial surfaces of posterior teeth and Gracey 13/14 for the distal surfaces. Gracey 1/2 is for anterior teeth, and Gracey 7/8 for the facial and lingual surfaces of posterior teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the eligibility criteria for the OMSB General Dentist exam?
You need a BDS or equivalent degree from a recognised university, post-qualification clinical experience with experience certificates, and your previous registration or licence. You then pass the OMSB Omani Examination for General Dentistry (OEGD) and register with MOH Oman through its Health Practitioners Registration e-service.
How many years of experience do dentists need for Oman?
MOH does not publish one number on its registration page. Our earlier guidance was at least 2 years after internship, and a ministerial decision reported in the press set 3 years for private-sector dentists trained outside Oman. Confirm the rule for your post with the employer and MOH before applying.
Where can I take the OMSB dental exam?
OMSB exams are offered at the OMSB National Test Center in Innovation Park Muscat and at Pearson VUE centres worldwide. You book through pearsonvue.com/omsb. In Pakistan, online booking is not available, so you use a voucher bought by bank transfer or book at a test centre.
How many times can I attempt the OMSB exam?
Pearson VUE currently states there is no maximum number of OMSB exam attempts. Retakes follow OMSB policy, and each new booking is paid again. The score report is emailed within 24 hours of the exam.
Do I need MFDS to work as a dentist in Oman?
Not for general dentist licensing. The MFDS or an equivalent is an entry requirement for the OMSB General Dentistry residency training programme, which is a separate postgraduate pathway. For licensing, the OEGD is the exam that matters.
