MOHAP Lab Technician Exam Quick Summary
To sit the MOHAP lab exam you need a recognised diploma (technician) or bachelor's degree (technologist) in medical laboratory science, a positive DataFlow report and a recent good standing certificate. The 2022 Unified PQR no longer sets a minimum period of experience for these titles. The exam is a Prometric computer-based MCQ paper covering clinical chemistry, haematology and blood bank, microbiology, immunology and lab quality and safety, with a 60% pass mark and 3 attempts.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) licenses laboratory staff for its own hospitals and for private labs in the emirates it regulates. Before you can be licensed, MOHAP evaluates your file and, in most cases, asks you to pass its exam. This page is only about laboratory titles: who can apply, what the paper covers and how to prepare. Lab technologist or lab technician: which title do you apply for?
The UAE uses one set of qualification rules for MOHAP, DHA and DOH, the Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR, 2022). It separates two main laboratory titles, and your degree decides which one you can hold.

A science degree that is not a medical lab degree (for example a general BSc or MSc in microbiology, biochemistry or biotechnology) is assessed case by case. It helps if your transcript shows clinical laboratory subjects and supervised hospital lab training. If your degree is borderline, apply for the title the evaluation officer is likely to accept rather than the one you want; a rejected evaluation costs you time and the fee.
What is eligibility criteria for MOHAP Lab Technicians exam?
You can apply for the MOHAP evaluation when you have all of the following:
- Educational qualification: a diploma or certificate (technician) or bachelor's degree (technologist) in Medical Laboratory Technology or Science from a recognised institution.
- Experience: the old rule of 2 years of post-qualification experience is out of date. The 2022 Unified PQR does not ask lab technicians or technologists for a minimum period of experience. What counts is recent practice: if you have been out of lab work for more than 2 years, the gap rules below apply.
- DataFlow verification: your degree, experience and licence must come back positive through the DataFlow process. MOHAP sends you the DataFlow payment link after it accepts your application.
- Good Standing Certificate: a recent Good Standing Certificate (GSC) from the health regulator where you are or were licensed, issued within the last 6 months.
- Valid passport and photo, plus legal translations of any document not in English or Arabic.
Gap of practice rules for allied health
A gap is time out of clinical lab work after you qualified. Under the PQR, allied health staff with a gap of 2 years or more must make it up before licensing:

In practice, the simplest files come from people who apply while they are still working in a lab, or soon after graduation and a hospital lab internship. If you have been away for a while, a few months back in a lab before you apply can save you the extra training.
What is Syllabus for Lab Technician?
MOHAP does not publish a detailed blueprint for the laboratory exam, and it does not release past questions. From the scope of the titles and what candidates report, the paper stays inside clinical laboratory work. Expect these areas:
Histopathology and cytology basics (fixation, processing, common stains) and phlebotomy technique also come up. Most questions are short scenarios: a result that does not fit the patient, a QC failure, a sample problem. Knowing why a result is wrong matters as much as knowing the normal range.
MOHAP lab exam format, passing score and fees
The exam is a computer-based multiple choice test delivered by Prometric, at centres in the UAE and abroad. MOHAP marks it Pass or Fail with a minimum of 60%, and you get a maximum of 3 attempts in a category. A cancelled or missed booking counts as an attempt. The MOHAP evaluation fee for allied health professionals is AED 300. DataFlow and Prometric are paid separately at the time you are sent the links. Question 1: Quality control
A chemistry analyser runs two levels of control before the morning batch. The level 1 glucose control reads 3.4 SD above its established mean. The level 2 control is within 1 SD, and yesterday's controls were all within 2 SD. Which Westgard rule has been violated, and what is the correct action?
A) 1-2s, a warning only, so patient samples can be released
B) 1-3s, reject the run and look for random error before testing patients
C) 2-2s, reject the run because of systematic error
D) R-4s, accept the run because only one level is affected

A single control value beyond 3 SD from the mean breaks the 1-3s rule, which is a rejection rule and usually points to random error (for example a bubble, a clot or a pipetting fault). 2-2s needs two consecutive values beyond 2 SD on the same side, and R-4s needs a 4 SD range between two controls in one run.
Question 2: Clinical chemistry
A well 40-year-old man has routine blood tests at a clinic. The lab reports potassium 7.9 mmol/L and total calcium 1.1 mmol/L. The serum is not haemolysed, the patient has no symptoms and his ECG is normal. The phlebotomist filled a lavender-top tube before the plain serum tube. What is the most likely explanation?
A) Delayed separation of the sample overnight
B) Contamination of the serum sample with K2-EDTA
C) Pseudohyperkalaemia from thrombocytosis
D) True hyperkalaemia from acute kidney injury
Correct answer: B) Contamination of the serum sample with K2-EDTA
Carry-over of potassium EDTA from a lavender tube raises potassium and chelates calcium, so the pair of very high potassium with very low calcium in a well patient is typical. Delayed separation and thrombocytosis raise potassium but do not lower calcium. The fix is to recollect using the correct order of draw, with EDTA tubes after serum tubes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do lab technicians need experience to sit the MOHAP exam?
Not under the 2022 Unified PQR, which sets no minimum experience for medical laboratory technicians or technologists. You do need recent practice: a gap of 2 years or more means extra CME and supervised training, and non-UAE nationals with a gap of more than 5 years cannot apply.
What is the difference between a lab technologist and a lab technician in the UAE?
A technologist holds a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science and can work more independently, including validation and quality control. A technician holds a diploma and performs routine testing under supervision. Each title has its own MOHAP evaluation and exam.
What is the passing score for the MOHAP lab exam?
MOHAP marks the exam Pass or Fail with a 60% minimum. You get 3 attempts in a category, and a cancelled or missed booking counts as one of them.
Can MSc Microbiology or biotechnology graduates apply as lab technologists?
Possibly. These degrees are assessed case by case, and the evaluation looks for clinical laboratory subjects and supervised hospital lab training in your transcript. If they are missing, the application may be refused for the technologist title.
