MOHAP Radiology Eligibility Quick Summary
You are eligible for the MOHAP Radiology specialist exam if you hold a medical degree, a completed internship and a postgraduate radiology qualification of at least 3 years that the Unified PQR recognises (for example MD Radiodiagnosis, FCPS, DNB, FRCR or an Arab or national board), plus the experience your qualification tier requires: none for Tier 1 and Tier 2, and 3 years for Tier 3. Radiographers and radiologic technologists are evaluated separately as allied health.
Radiology is one of the specialist titles MOHAP (Ministry of Health and Prevention) licenses for its hospitals and for private facilities in the emirates it covers. The general rules for every specialty are on MOHAP specialist doctors eligibility. This page applies them to radiology: which qualifications usually count, how much experience you need, the documents, and what the exam tends to cover. Who is eligible for MOHAP Radiology exam?
Radiologists who want to sit the MOHAP Radiology exam should meet these criteria:
- A primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with a completed internship.
- A postgraduate qualification in radiology or diagnostic imaging from a structured training programme of at least 3 years, listed in the PQR: for example MD or DNB Radiodiagnosis, FCPS Diagnostic Radiology, FRCR, an Arab Board or Saudi Board in radiology, or a North American or European board.
- The post-qualification experience your PQR tier requires (table below), in licensed, paid radiology practice.
- No break in clinical practice of more than 2 years at the time of evaluation.
Short diplomas such as a 2-year DMRD, or a 2-year membership, do not usually give the Specialist title on their own, because the PQR asks for a programme of at least 3 years. Doctors in that position, and residents who have not finished training, can still apply for the MOHAP GP exam if they meet the GP criteria.
How much experience does a radiologist need?
The old rule of "2 years for specialist, 5 years for consultant" is no longer how MOHAP counts it. Experience now depends on the tier of your qualification:

What are the required documents for MOHAP Radiology exam?

What does the MOHAP Radiology exam cover?
It is a Prometric computer-based exam of single-best-answer MCQs, marked Pass or Fail with a minimum of 60%, and you have 3 attempts. MOHAP does not publish a radiology blueprint. From what candidates report, questions are short clinical scenarios that ask for the best next imaging test, the most likely diagnosis from a described finding, or the safe way to handle contrast and radiation. Radiographers and radiologic technologists
If you are a radiographer (BSc Radiography, BRIT, DMRT or similar), you do not sit the Radiology specialist exam. You apply under allied health, for a radiographer or technologist title set out in the PQR, and the evaluation fee is AED 300. The route is the same: evaluation, then DataFlow, then a Prometric exam for your category. Diplomas are judged against the PQR minimum for the title, so upload your full transcript and experience letters.

Question 1: Contrast safety
A 68-year-old man with type 2 diabetes needs a contrast-enhanced CT of the abdomen for suspected diverticular abscess. He takes metformin 1 g twice daily. His eGFR today is 25 mL/min/1.73 m² and stable compared with last month. Which is the most appropriate plan for his metformin?
A) Continue metformin unchanged, as the risk is negligible
B) Withhold metformin from the time of contrast, keep it stopped for 48 hours and restart only after renal function is rechecked and stable
C) Stop metformin 7 days before and perform a non-contrast CT instead

In patients with eGFR below 30 or acute kidney injury, iodinated contrast can worsen renal function and metformin can then accumulate and cause lactic acidosis. Current contrast guidance is to stop metformin at the time of the scan, withhold it for 48 hours and restart once renal function is confirmed stable. Patients with eGFR of 30 or more and no acute kidney injury do not need to stop. Dialysis is not used for prevention.
Question 2: Imaging in pregnancy
A 27-year-old woman at 22 weeks of gestation has 18 hours of right lower quadrant pain, low-grade fever and a raised white cell count. Graded compression ultrasound does not visualise the appendix and shows no other cause. Which is the most appropriate next imaging study?
A) CT of the abdomen and pelvis with IV contrast
B) MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without IV gadolinium
C) MRI of the abdomen and pelvis with IV gadolinium
D) Abdominal radiograph

Ultrasound is first line for suspected appendicitis in pregnancy. When it is non-diagnostic, non-contrast MRI is the preferred next test: it is highly accurate and avoids ionising radiation. Gadolinium crosses the placenta and is avoided unless essential. CT is reserved for when MRI is not available, and a plain radiograph does not help.

Who is eligible for the MOHAP Radiology exam?

How many years of experience does a radiologist need for MOHAP?
For the Specialist title, Tier 1 and Tier 2 qualifications need no experience after qualifying, and Tier 3 needs 3 years (1 year for UAE nationals). For the Consultant title, Tier 1 needs 2 years and Tier 2 needs 5 years; Tier 3 cannot become consultant.
Is DMRD enough for the MOHAP Radiology specialist exam?
Usually not on its own. The PQR asks for a specialty training programme of at least 3 years, and a 2-year diploma generally falls short. DMRD holders can apply for the GP title if they meet the GP criteria, and the evaluation officer confirms the final title.
Is the MOHAP Radiology exam written or oral?
MOHAP describes a Prometric computer-based MCQ exam, marked Pass or Fail with a 60% minimum and a maximum of 3 attempts. It does not publish a radiology-specific blueprint, so prepare across all body systems, imaging choice and contrast and radiation safety.
Can radiographers sit the MOHAP Radiology exam?
No. The Radiology exam is for doctors. Radiographers and radiologic technologists apply under allied health for their own PQR title, pay the AED 300 evaluation fee and sit the exam for that category.
