DHA Dentist Licensing: Qualification and Experience Requirements (2026)
DHA Dentist Requirements Quick Summary
To apply for the DHA General Dentist title, an international dentist needs a recognised dental degree (BDS, DDS, DMD or equivalent), a completed 12-month internship and 2 years of licensed clinical experience after the internship. Specialist and consultant dentists also need a recognised postgraduate qualification, and the experience required depends on its tier under the Unified PQR.
Dentists get more questions wrong at the eligibility stage than at the exam. The usual problems are an internship that was not counted correctly, experience done before registration, or a postgraduate degree that is shorter than the PQR expects. This page covers the dental rules only: the General Dentist title, specialist and consultant tiers, and the grey areas readers ask us about (fresh graduates, self-employed dentists and practice gaps). What are the DHA General Dentist requirements?
DHA, DOH and MOHAP all use the Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR). For a non-UAE national who studied outside the UAE, the General Dentist title needs:
UAE nationals, children of Emirati women and graduates of UAE dental schools do not need the 2 years of experience if they obtain the General Dentist title within 2 years of finishing the internship.
What are requirements for Specialist and Consultant Dentist?
You need your primary dental degree plus a recognised specialty qualification. The PQR sets minimum lengths for the programme: a clinical residency of at least 3 years, a clinical master's of at least 2 years, or a clinical PhD of at least 3 years. Each country's qualifications are then placed in a tier, and the tier decides the experience you need after qualifying.

Some specialties, such as oral and maxillofacial surgery and orthodontics, are often longer programmes, and the PQR country lists set the accepted length for each one. Do not assume a short certificate course will be accepted. Surgical dental specialties must also provide logbooks.
What if I have a specialty degree but not enough experience?
The PQR lets a dentist with a specialty qualification but without the required experience be accepted as a General Dentist instead. This does not apply to dental radiology, forensic dentistry, dental pathology or maxillofacial surgery. Older pages mentioned a "Specialist Dentist Under Supervision" licence. That title is not in the current PQR or DHA licensing manual. DHA's manual instead has a Trainee title for professionals who do not yet meet the PQR experience rule, working under a clinical supervisor at an approved facility.
What are application process tips for DHA Dentistry Exam?
The order matters. Doing these steps in sequence saves money and weeks of back and forth.
Is internship mandatory for DHA dentist eligibility?
Yes. The PQR requires a completed 12-month internship after graduation for the General Dentist title, and your 2 years of experience are counted after it. If your internship was shorter or split across institutions, get a certificate that shows the exact dates, because DataFlow will verify them.
Is 2 years experience mandatory for DHA general dentist licensing?
For non-UAE nationals who studied outside the UAE, yes. The experience must be:
- hands-on clinical dentistry with real patients
- done while you held a valid licence or registration
- paid or contracted work (observerships and voluntary posts do not count)
- documented in experience letters that DataFlow can verify with the employer
A point many dentists miss: your licence has to cover the experience you claim. If your council registration came months after you started working, those early months may not count.
Can fresh dental graduates apply for DHA?
Not for the full General Dentist title. Without the internship and 2 years of experience, the realistic routes are the Intern or Resident titles (which need acceptance into an approved DHA programme) or a Trainee licence at an approved facility under supervision. Most fresh graduates are better off building their 2 years at home first.
Can self-employed dentists apply for DHA?
Yes, but the proof is harder. DataFlow verifies experience with the employer, and when you are the employer that check needs extra evidence. Keep your clinic licence or registration, your professional licence for the whole period, and official documents that show the clinic was operating (such as business or tax registration). Expect DHA or DataFlow to ask for more if the letter is signed by you.
What if I have a clinical gap before applying?
A break of more than 2 years is a "gap of practice" under the PQR. Dentists with a gap of 2 to 3 years need 40 CME credits and 4 months of supervised training, and the requirement rises for longer gaps. Non-UAE nationals with a gap of more than 5 years cannot apply. If you are close to 2 years out of practice, apply sooner rather than later.
What are preparation tips for DHA Dentistry Exam?
- Read the syllabus and exam format for your title first, so you know what to study.

- Plan 2 to 3 months of study at 3 to 4 hours a day. Dentists who are working full time usually need the full 3 months.
